The sky is dark, almost too dark. The clouds are nowhere to be found, drown by the thickness of darkness surrounding it. Even the moon was swallowed. Everything is so dark...very dark, indeed. The boat rocked slightly as the captain steered the wheel. They are changing direction, perhaps to the south, if she is not mistaken. After all, the stars aren't here to guide. Sera grips the railing and cringes at the sharp cold against her palm, but she didn't let go. Soon, the cold dies down and her warmth spreads onto the metal.
The sky is clear, dark clear. There is no poem starts like this. It has always been beautiful night, with stars and moon. The poet will describe the wind and the shapes of the cloud. But not tonight. Tonight, everything is hidden. So, no poem tonight, Sera sighed. It has been a day since they started sailing. Sera, her father and her attendant. It is summer and they decided to spend their holiday at the ocean instead of lying around the beach like previous years. Something different, her father said, to make new memories.
But Sera never like the ocean. It is too vicious and unpredictable. The water might be calm today, but there is no guarantee of when it will go berserk. Most of the natural disaster starts with ocean and tsunami. She tried to get some sleep since a coupe of hours ago, but her instinct keeps her awake. What if she falls asleep and found herself at the bottom of the ocean, never to wake up again? It is too risky. If she is about to leave this world, be it the stars and the moon as her last memory. But even the stars and the moon are not here tonight. Perhaps, they too scared of the ocean.
Sera moved her shoulders in circle and tilts her neck to sides. She stares at the sky for too long that her neck feels sore. Sera leaned her elbow onto the railing to throw the burden off her muscles and threw her glances at the dock. They must have fallen asleep, seeing how quite it is. Sera turn towards the ocean this time and what she saw made her stomach flips.
Down, at her feet, the ocean has turned black. The sound of the ocean disappears, only the howling from the abyss that grows bigger and malicious. She tries to scream, but her voice stuck in her throat. Everything turns black. She couldn't even identify the horizon separating between the sky and the ocean. Everything looks the same, as if they have entered a cave...no, perhaps another world where darkness is endless. A deep growl caught her ears. She doesn't know where it came from, but it sounds close. Too close, almost. She let out a gasp and reliefs her burning lungs from the breath that she doesn't know she has held. Then, she realizes that a fog formed around her mouth from the air she breathe out. Is it that cold? She does not realized it until her body started to flinch in cold. Her hands is shaking and her feet are glued to the ground that she can barely feels it. This is too much, she thought, isn't it still mid of summer?
When she finally blinks her eyes that the darkness disappears. The smell of the salt water came back and the cold changes into a warm sensation, running from the tip of her fingers to her neck. The ocean still looks black, but not as before. It looks...real, for a change. The sky still bare of stars and moon, still dark and unforgiving, but it looks real at least. The growl disappears too, she wonders where to, when it sounds so close not a moment ago. Sera shakes her head, trying to be more realistic. Could it be a dream? No, she is wide awake. But when the images from earlier starts to float into her mind, she decides it is better to think of it as a dream, a nightmare more like it. After all, who have not heard of micro nap? It is when one's body shut itself down similar to sleeping, when a person is too tired, maybe lack of three days sleep. But as far as she can tell, she slept last night in her villa bedroom just fine before they went on board.
No, Sera shakes her head again, it is just my imagination.
Maybe...no, no! Sera pushes her thoughts. It is not like her to think of the impossible. Everything can be drawn from scientific and logical explanation. There is no such thing, Sera convinced herself. But still, she cannot let it go. Finally, she let go of the railing and walks back into ship, where her bedroom, equipped with a single bed, warm goose feather mattress, blanket and pillows are waiting for her.
"Perhaps, a good nice sleep would do me good." And she sleeps.
